World’s 10 Smartest Countries for Math and Science…

In the last century, our world has taken monumental steps forward when it comes to science. So which countries have contributed to this progress most? From medicine breakthroughs to space explorations, here are the 10 Most Advanced Countries in Science. These have been ranked and averaged according to the number of patents created, scientific documents published and cited, gross domestic expenditure on research and development, and space science research.

10. Spain

9. Italy
8. Switzerland
7. France
6. Canada
5. Japan
4. United Kingdom
3. Germany
2. China
1. The United States

With 147,652 patents and more than $453 billion invested by the government in research and development, the United States top the list, though many of our country’s top scientists come from other places in the world.

Interesting, when correlated with the student performance of these countries in the field of math and science, it was revealed that even where students have the highest performance—it doesn’t guarantee that notable researchers or discoveries will originate there. Singapore, for instance, is the smartest country in math and science but falls at the number 17 spot in the previously mentioned Criteria.

Still, the list for the smartest countries in the world is quite different. Singapore tops that list, followed by Hong Kong and South Korea. In fact, of 76 countries ranked by BBC, the top half is dominated by Asian Nations. European countries take up most of the spots 5 through 30 in the rankings, and the United States is tied with Italy at 28.
