Claim: NASA is hiring people to DEFEND Earth from Extraterrestrial threats

Do you have what it takes to be part of NASA’s latest group? Their goal is simple: Protect Earth from extraterrestrial threats.

It almost sounds like a superhero description right? We need YOU to protect humanity from the dangers of outer space, from aliens to anything else that might pose a threat. Well, ok, it’s not quite like that, but the job description isn’t far from it.

This is your chance for a job that is out of the ordinary and very well paid. The US Government has opened a vacancy at NASA, and anyone who gets the role will protect the Earth from extraterrestrial pollution and vice versa.

The position one lucky person will get was created after the signing of the Outer Space Treaty in 1967 and was formed to make sure that humans, during space exploration don’t contaminate planets, moons, or any other objects they come into contact in space. However, the job also has to take care of any unwanted extraterrestrial micros from getting to Earth. We don’t want an alien virus striking down Earth, do we?

The US space agency explains how “more spacecraft are being developed in North America today than at any other time in history,” and has therefore begun a process to accept job applications “in preparation for the trip to Mars”.

Future astronauts will “take off, once again from the coast of Florida” to conduct “deep space exploration missions that will aid a future human mission to Mars.”

In that sense, NASA is looking for a “planetary protection officer” and offers an annual salary of between $ 124,000 and $ 187,000. The person selected for this job will be accountable for the implementation and supervision of planetary protection policies in NASA space flight missions.

Interested? The job post reads: “Planetary protection is involved with the avoidance of organic-constituent and biological contamination in human and robotic space exploration.”

“NASA maintains policies for planetary protection, applicable to all space flight missions that may intentionally or unintentionally carry Earth organisms and organic constituents to the planets or other solar system bodies, and any mission employing spacecraft, which are intended to return to Earth and its biosphere with samples from extraterrestrial targets of exploration.”

The requirements for this awesome job position:

An engineering or a bachelor’s degree in science (biology, physics or mathematics). Postgraduate studies will be evaluated.

Three years of related professional experience or one thousand hours of flight as a pilot.

Candidates must pass NASA’s long-term physical tests.

You have to be a US citizen. There are no age restrictions: the agency has accepted applications from people between 26 and 46 years, and the average is at 34.

According to IFLScience, there are only TWO full-time roles like this anywhere on Earth. One at the European Space Agency and one at NASA so anyone who gets the job will get to brag about it definitely.

The Job also includes traveling around the world to inspect various components to be used in space, in upcoming missions like the Mars 2020 Rover or the Europa Clipper. The job also requires a ‘top-secret’ security clearance, which is why the job description lists “demonstrated skills in diplomacy” as necessary.
